General Hoefly entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1944 and served with the 235th General Hospital in France. She returned to the United States in 1946 and was assigned to Valley Forge General Hospital as a neuropsychiatric nurse. In 1949 Hoefly transferred to the newly established U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps. She became a flight nurse with the 1734th Air Transportation Squadron at Brooks Air Force Base in 1956. Hoefly then became chief nurse of the 5th Air Force in Japan. In 1968 she was named chief of the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps, becoming the first woman to hold that position as a brigadier general. Hoefly served as chief of the Nurse Corps until her retirement in 1974.
