General Schatz graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1983. After pilot training, he became a C-130 Flight Commander with the 21st Tactical Airlift Squadron in 1987, stationed at Clark Air Base, Philippines. In 1991, Schatz was assigned to the 374th Tactical Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan, as Chief of Wing Special Operations. He served as Aide-de-Camp to the Commander of the Fifth Air Force in 1992. Schatz was made Commander of the 50th Airlift Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base in 1997. He returned to Yokota Air Base in 2001 as Commander of the 374th Operations Group. Schatz was posted as Vice Commander of the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base in 2003. He became Deputy Director of Operations and Plans of the US Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in 2007. Schatz was made Commander of the 314th Airlift Wing that same year at Little Rock Air Force Base. He became Director of Strategic Plans for the Air Mobility Command in 2011 at Scott Air Force Base. Before his retirement in 2016, Schatz was serving as Vice Commander of the Air Mobility Command.
